Most beginning editors do not have a wide range of options when it comes to great editing software for free or for cheap. They're usually stuck with Windows Movie Maker or iMovie. None of these are bad. In fact, I've seen AMAZING videos created with these programs, but once you master the program(s), you tend to want more features to work with and that could mean more advanced (and expensive) programs.
I've had to research alternatives over the years and I even wanted to try cheaper software like Sony Vegas, however, I learned that SV likes to crash a lot for me so I had to quit that program and move onto Premier Pro. Results are different for everyone so don't dismiss Sony Vegas based on my experience.
And now, here is a list of alternative editing software to Adobe Premiere Pro:
HitFilm Pro - Free Demo Available
Ignite Pro - Plug-ins (free demo available)
Natron - Alternative to After Effects (suggest watching tutorials for this one)
For many, many more apps to explore, check out the blog post below for a large list of video editing software.
Most of these website offer free demos so I recommend trying them before purchasing them. You can also look up tutorials about the programs and see if the workflow works for you.
